Apple improves iPod Touch by iPhone 6 level camera and chip

The improvement brings iPod Touch close to features in iPhone 6.  The new Touch now has an 8-megapixel camera, which has been upgraded from 5-megapixel from the previous version.  The processor is 64 bit same in iPhone enabling faster and better graphics for motion tracking and games.  However, the display is same as of four inch.

The iPod was launched in 2001 and helped Apple gain the market share and created the image of innovator.  But once the most favorite music player is no more in the limelight as users can now easily access music on Apple Watches and smartphones.  iPod sales have declined since 2008 when it sold record units amounting to 54.83 million.  Last year the figure stood at 14.4 million only.  The company now adds the iPod sales in other products like Apple Watch and TV, no more giving its individual sales.

There are different models like 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB with price ranging from $199 to $399.  The device will come with latest iOS software including the Apple Music.  Although iPod is not quite a money generating product but being cheap and simpler it’s a good choice for music, games and media.  Free iPods were also offered from Apple for teachers as well as students.  The device continues to bring revenue in dollars for the company even with the declining sales.

iPod Touch has been the favorite most iPod recently, which is quite similar to iPhone without a cellular connection.  There are many features which are not found in this device but are available in iPhones like touch sensor, large screen and a strong processor for games and apps.

The company reduced prices for iPod Touch year ago and added a rear camera with four fresh colors including, pink, blue, red and yellow.  Before that the device ranged between $229 and $399 having only one front camera with only two colors silver and grey.  With the introduction of iPhone 6, 6 plus, Apple Watch the company discontinued iPod Classic.

Now Apple has three different iPods with different prices, storage capacities and capabilities.  The cheapest one is iPod Shuffle having only 2GB space and priced at $49.  Then comes iPod Nano with 16 GB memory and cost $149.  Both models have eight different colors but both of them don’t work with the Apple Music which was launched in June.

The smartphone giant has not changed Shuffle and iPod Nano but has increased the options for color.  Now users have six different color options which include silver, space gray, blue, red, gold and pink.

Last major update for iPod shuffle happened in 2010 although the color options were changed in 2012.  For iPod Nano the last update was in 2012 and even for iPod Touch the last significant hardware update was in 2012.  16 gigabytes iPod Touch was released in 2013 but did not have a back camera as well as loop strap and also offered only two colors.  The same model was changed by adding a rear camera, reducing price and adding more colors.
